The Human Hurricane
I read that meteorologist started naming hurricanes because it helps people to remember the storms as well as to communicate about them more effectively. If I am correct, there are actually lists of hurricane names. This list rotates and repeats every six years. Hurricanes that are damaging like “Katrina” are retired from the list, however, for historical reasons.
The Atlantic names for this hurricane season are: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, Lee, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince, and Whitney. Did you notice that names are already in the queue for storms that are expected to come. These are storms that have not formed but names are already on the shelf.
Storms are coming. Since the storms are coming, preparation should be made. When it comes to hurricanes, having an evacuation plan is number one on the list. Secondly, you will need some supplies. Make sure your insurance is up to date. And don’t forget copies of your important documents. Now, I know, I know. If you are already in the storm this information is a day late and a dollar short.
Let us at the least remember to pray for those who have suffered loss. Then share what we have where we can. So many people are hurting. And when people are hurting be careful not to judge. Hurt people need help and not a sermon of I told you so. I know if I was hungry, I would want some food before hearing a lecture about how I should have listened or been better prepared.
As for us, sooner or later, a storm will come your way that’s so personal you will have to name it. You will not be able to prevent its’ coming but you can prepare as best you can. Get yourself an evacuation plan, because there will be storms coming of which no amount of preparation will be able to withstand. Your hurricane Harvey will blow onto the shores of your life. The cause will not be Mother Nature, but possibly your mother, or brother, or some family member or friend. And then, "You will understand why hurricanes are named after people.”
