Poor Little Birdie

The snow or sleet is pelting you. The temperature is freezing you. It’s too bad to go anywhere. All your efforts have failed. You are caught in elements too big for you to handle. This is your last move. Bow your head. Say a prayer. Weather the storm.

I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I’ve got the T-shirt, cap, belt, socks and posters. I’ve been caught in the storms of life. Feeling like a bird with a broken wing against odds too great for me, all I can do, is like this little bird. Just bow my head. Say a prayer. Weather the storm. I pray because God’s eye is on the sparrow, and I know He is watching me. I pray because when I can’t stand, I can always kneel, that is, pray. I’m in a storm. The ice is beating me down. The snow falling upon me makes me feel as if I am being stoned by nature. The temperature is so frigid. I pray. Why should we pray to God in our storms?

Look back at the picture. With all that’s going on notice that the bird is perched on the slippery ledge. The bird is in a storm, but sits stable on a ledge. In a storm, but stable. Praying can keep you stable in a storm. By not praying your life can become a slippery slope. You can fall from where you are. I pray.

The little bird sits alone in the midst of a storm. The sleet is pounding. The snow is blinding. The coldness is paralyzing. The wind is gusting. The bird is perched on an icy edge. Yet, with its’ head bowed, the bird remains stable. How can this be? You ask such good questions.

Listen carefully. As long as the bird keeps its’ legs bent underneath it, it’s claws or tendons fasten automatically like a vice. As long as its’ legs stay bent, the bird cannot fall. The grip is built into the bending of the legs. You missed it. The clenching that stabilizes the bird in slippery places is built into the bending of the legs of the bird. I pray because when I bend my knee I can remain stable even in the place in which I cannot stand.

So, you poor little birdie, in your storm just bend your knees and bow your head in prayer. Then access a stability and an anchor, that no matter how strong the storm, it will not allow you to be blown away, cast aside or be buried alive.
