Shade Not Darkness
On August 21, 2017 the moon will eclipse the sun and cast its shadow over parts of the United States of America. This will be a once in a lifetime event for many and will only last for a couple of minutes. It’s a once in a lifetime chance to be a part of a “multi-century” experience. In certain places the sun will be completely blocked out by the moon. And those who experience this event, will never forget how the moon so cast its’ shadow that it became dark at noon.
So what can we nonscientists take away from the great event beyond just a “wow” or a bevy of photographs and videos? Perhaps, like the moon, we too can cast such a long shadow that our influence will still be felt years after we are dead and gone. This would be a good time to think about your life and legacy in terms of casting a shadow that provides shade and comfort from the scorching heat that sure to come your family’s way, instead of a shadow that only brings darkness in an already dismal and bleak existence of so many.
Live now in such a way that your death only extends your existence on earth. Live so that your children and grand children and great grand children talk about you in favor and high regard. Try to cast a shadow that lasts so long and reaches so far that the benefits are felt by those unaware of your life and sacrifice. I use the word sacrifice loosely because I’m reminded that to talk about sacrifice in the same conversation about love is an insult. I’ve never sacrificed anything for someone I loved. It was always a privilege.
And be like the eclipse of August 21, 2017, although it will never be forgotten, the event itself will not take very long. There is still time for you to cast a positive, uplifting and life changing shadow upon your family and friends. In this moment, you can change your mind and attitude and revolutionize your surroundings. Just one seed can yield a harvest for generations to yet be born and for years still to come.
Be shade and not darkness.
